Description

Codelist for multiple sclerosis including Y codes not mapped previously, Balo disease, Schilder's disease Also includes clinically isolated syndrome and optic neuromyelitis

Methodology

Codelist designed to identify people who may not have a discrete episode of acute transverse myelitis recorded, due to a diagnosis of MS

This list includes all codes in https://www.opencodelists.org/codelist/opensafely/multiple-sclerosis/2020-05-12/ It additionally includes: - Y codes (Y1015 Multiple Sclerosis; Y1f23 Multiple sclerosis monitoring invitation) - Balo and Schilder's disease (X005l Balo concentric sclerosis; F211. Schilder's disease or Balo's concentric sclerosis)

This codelist also includes two related conditions which could be removed for a codelist solely of MS: - Clinically isolated syndrome, on the basis that a person with clinically isolated syndrome who experiences acute transverse myelitis may be diagnosed directly with MS rather than coded as acute transverse myelitis - Optic neuromyelitis, as this condition also includes recurrent episodes of acute transverse myelitis

The codelist was developed with advice from Arina Tamborska, University of Liverpool

Codelists are developed by a broad community of users for individual study purposes, which may or may not meet the needs of other studies. They should not be thought of as universal definitions of a particular condition.

We don't offer any guarantees about what they do or don't identify. Users should carefully check that any codelist meets their needs, and seek clinical input where appropriate.
